David Bassett:  Secretary General, European Aquaculture Technology & Innovation Platform (EATiP).

Involved with EATiP since the platform formation in 2008, David assumed the role of General Secretary at the start of 2021 and is responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic coordination of this European wide multi actor aquaculture European Technology Platform.

Working in the aquaculture sector since 2005, David spent a decade as the General Secretary of a UK producers association and through this became active in EU funded Framework Programme projects on behalf of both EATiP and the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP).

He currently chairs the Research Focus Group of the Aquaculture Advisory Council (AAC), in addition to working as an expert for the delivery of the DG MARE / CINEA funded Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism and project partner in the Horizon Europe – Mission Ocean funded OLAMUR project.  He sits on numerous European Partnership & project advisory boards as well as the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research Fish Committee (SCAR-Fish).

Among previous roles, David served as a director of the Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum, acted as Director & Company Secretary for an independent industry led quality standard/certification scheme, has sat on the Technical Advisory Group of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC TAG) and has been invited as a guest lecturer at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling (UK).

Roger Hofseth started his career in the mid 1990’s in Ålesund.

He held various roles on fishing boats and in local fish processing companies before founding his own company in 2001. He established what today is known as Hofseth International, a vertically integrated seafood conglomerate and one of the emerging leaders in the salmon industry today.

Hofseth’s vision is ambitious and forward-thinking: to become the world’s most sustainable seafood producer. This vision drives every aspect of the Company’s operations, from its commitment to sustainability to its innovative practices.

What technology gaps needs to be addressed to improve on fish health and welfare?

In the past 10 to 15 years salmon farming has undertaken a tremendous change in technology applications and production forms. This, combined with intensified farming and increased external challenges, it is overdue to look closer at areas we can improve on. During this winter GATH and PatoGen AS have worked together to analyze root factors and identify areas for increased focus and improvements within technology and digitalization to improve fish health and welfare. The highlights from this work will be presented at the conference by Elisabeth Faureng.  

Elisabeth Faureng is a veterinarian (DVM) with solid operational experience and has high ambitions for fish health. Elisabeth have for several years worked with fish health and production in Cermaq Norway and is currently part of the PatoGen fish health in the role as senior fish health advisor.
